Good morning, sunshines, and happy Met Gala Monday, aka the first Monday of May! It's a day filled with fashion, pop culture, and amazing red carpet moments that feed our hungry souls for the entire month.
As it's currently 9 am (where I am), I obviously can't compile this year's top red carpet moments from the Met Gala since it hasn't happened yet. BUT! What we can do is revisit a few of the best looks from previous years and make some predictions (the winner wins bragging rights) about who will be the best dressed and such. Also, for those who don't know, this year's MET theme is drum roll "Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.” In addition to the theme, which encapsulates the overall concept of the event, the Met Gala also has a "dress code" this year: The Garden of Time."
Now, I hate to bore you to death because I know most of you don’t have the attention span to read for more than five minutes at a time, which is totally fine. So let me just summarize what today's newsletter will be about, just in case you want to skip it because you aren’t as culturally obsessed as the rest of us mortals.
Firstly, as mentioned before, we’ll touch base on this year's MET Gala theme (I’ll just explain what it represents, the theme). Then, I’ll post some of last year's Met Gala top pop culture moments that I still think about today.
Secondly, on today's agenda is the book we’ll all be reading (or in my case, trying to read) this coming week. And lastly, before we touch base on the best pop culture moments of last week, I will talk about Anne Hathaway’s new rom-com, ‘The Idea of You’, and why it's either a hit or miss. Ready? Set? Scroll.
Met Gala 2024: A Brief Summary:
So, as mentioned earlier, this year's theme is "Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion," and the dress code is ‘The Garden of Time’ let’s talk about it.
The Exhibit: According to the Met Museum, the exhibit will showcase 250 rare items drawn from the Costume Institute’s permanent collection. Spanning over 400 years of fashion history, the pieces will include designs by Schiaparelli, Dior, Givenchy, and more.
The Theme: Moving away from fairytales, the exhibit spotlights 50 fragile items from the Met's collection—dubbed the "Sleeping Beauties." Inspired by an 1877 silk satin ball gown by Charles Frederick Worth, it will be divided into three zones: "Land, Sea, and Sky." Given the delicate nature of the pieces, technology like AI and CGI will be utilized to display them.
The Dress Code: The Met exhibit and the Gala's dress code are often confused, but they are different. The dress code, "The Garden of Time," is inspired by J.G. Ballard's short story of the same name. In the story, a couple gathers glass-like flowers as a menacing mob approaches.
Stay tuned on my Instagram and next week’s newsletter to go in depth on this years Met Gala!
Met Gala 2023 Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty: Pop Culture Highlights
The best dressed in my useless opinion: Anne Hathaway in Versace
Most insane dressed: Doja Cat living it up to her name (also a nod to Karl Lagerfeld’s cat)
Noteworthy: Jared Leto quite literally embodied Choupette (again, Karl’s cat)
Book Club: A New Dynamic
This is not a real book club; obviously, it's just my book recommendation of the week. Instead of me having read this book already, I was thinking we could read it together and discuss it next week. Or, well, I can discuss it, and you can read and comment your opinions on my socials or below. What do you think? If this doesn’t work for you, then of course, I’ll go back to recommending books I have read before! This week’s book recommendation is…
In the name of transparency, I chose this book because I bought it two months ago and haven’t gotten around to reading it, so I feel this is my chance. But in my defense, the woman at the bookstore told me it was amazing, and why wouldn’t I listen to her?
Now, from what I gathered from Goodreads, this book falls into the historical fiction—magical realism genre. "Weyward" is used in the First Folio edition of Macbeth. In later versions, "Weyward" was replaced by "Weird." "Weyward" introduces readers to the Ayres-Weyward family, and this is a tale of three women, all from the same family line. We get four hundred years of their history starting in 1619 and ending in 2019.
In 2019, Kate Ayres, 29, escapes an abusive relationship in London for Weyward Cottage. Inherited from her Great Aunt Violet, the rundown cottage holds hidden secrets dating back to 1619 and the witch trials.
In 1619, Altha Weyward, 21, faces accusations of witchcraft and murder, relying on her natural knowledge to secure her freedom.
In 1942, Violet Ayres, 16, longs for freedom and seeks clues about her mother, finding solace in a locket with the initial "W" and the word "Weyward."
Three women, three timelines, bound by their connection to nature.
Happy reading!
‘The Idea of You’: A Modern Rom Com or Plain Fan-Fiction
The movie, based on the book by Robinne Lee of the same name, premiered on May 2nd on Amazon Prime Video. I watched it on Friday, and honestly, guys, I'm reeling. This has been the literal worst experience of my life. I’ve never had to look away from the screen so much because I cringed like never before in this movie.
Maybe I’m the problem? But it's very clear that this is fan fiction about One Direction, or more specifically about Harry Styles, in which the author wrote her sexual fantasies with her celebrity crush and boom! A book. Throughout the movie, I questioned if I was just not in the mood for a romcom, but no, that's wasn't it, since I rewatched "Anyone But You" later that same day and I was giggling like a school girl.
I just need to be clear. I loved Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine’s acting, but I was just not into the plot. I found it cringey and embarrassing; my head hurt from rolling my eyes so hard. Honestly, this was a complete miss for me. But I will say, if you like the Pop Star x Single Mom martyr trope, then awesome!! You will absolutely love this.
Onto the last section of this week’s newsletter.
